Ahh…Cheese, I Hate You Now!

Over the weekend, my husband found a new gluten free snack for me. It was Cheetos Simply Natural. Yesterday, I took them to work for lunch. It didn’t even occur to me that these would have milk or cheese in them (I’m just not used to thinking about it yet – so focused on gluten and sugar!) so I ate a full serving of them.

About two hours later, here comes the brain fog – which I haven’t had any episodes of since I cut out the dairy. But at the time, I figured my old symptoms were just getting kicked back up and I was just having one of those days. After all, last time, the dairy/cheese caused nausea and an upset stomach. I also had a massage on my lunch break and that can release toxins, etc, so I figured it may have been from that.

In all my infinite wisdom (ha!), we decided to try Mexican last night since the Cheetos didn’t cause any stomach issues. I ordered my usual (actually the only thing I can usually safely eat at a Mexican restaurant as far as gluten is concerned) and by the time we were leaving, my stomach was rumbling and felt like it was doing somersaults. And the brain fog that had eased up came back hard core.

Now, I definitely know something is going on with the cheese (still haven’t tested out other dairy products except butter for cooking). Supposedly with the cross reactions with gluten, your body picks up on that and reacts as if you’ve had gluten so you get all of the same symptoms.

Once again I’m left to wonder if this has been the cause of my symptoms for months now and it’s just now gotten bad enough to also cause the digestion type issues as well. I wish I had a food diary now as I’m curious if the days I had nausea when I was back on the Doxy, if I also had cheese that day. Not to mention the days I had brain fog!

Maybe this explains why the brain fog would appear so randomly and 99% of the time, it would be after lunch! That would be so nice if that was the case as that means it’s something I actually have control over! Not that I want to have to eliminate yet another thing from my diet but if it makes me feel better, then I will.

The good thing, if you can even say it that way, about cross reactions is if you come off of them for several months (3-6 is what I’ve read), you may be able to introduce them back without issue. The theory is that it gives the gut time to heal and once that has happened, it will no longer recognize non-gluten substances as gluten.

In the meantime, I’ll be doing more label reading and even more eating at home. The thought of going somewhere to eat and telling them I can’t have gluten, dairy or sugar is just too much! They’d probably just bring me a piece of cardboard! haha

So I’ll give it a few days to let this work its way back out of my system and then start tracking symptoms. I’m also going to start keeping a food diary again so I can keep track with any correlation between the food I eat and how I feel.

This is so ridiculous!! If this keeps up, I’m beginning to wonder what’s going to be left for me to eat!

One Week Without Antibiotics

So it’s now been a full week since I ended all of my antibiotics. Right now, I’m just continuing with my thryoid and adrenal meds, probiotics and magnesium. Every other day, I take biotin and vitamin D and when I remember, I take my multi. I have to admit, it has been great to not have to choke down 20-30 pills a day! I may end up adding back some of the supplements at some point but for right now, I’m happy where I’m at.

Another thing that happened this week is we think we may have discovered another food allergy. I’ve read a lot about cross reactions with gluten where your body recognizes other things as gluten as well and you react in the same way. Well, we went to eat Mexican over the weekend (I had my usual safe food of bean dip with chips fried in a separate fryer) and within just a few minutes, my stomach was cramping and I had intense nausea (to the point of finally giving up and taking Zofran several hours after it started). I didn’t think much of it then – just figured maybe my body was still adjusting to being off of antibiotics.

On Sunday night, we made a gluten free pizza. I ate one piece and within about ten minutes, here comes the nausea again. So we started trying to find the correlation between the two and the only thing that was the same was the cheese! With that, it essentially ends any eating out for me as well as many of the “convenience” type foods I was eating like pizza. Probably not such a bad thing. 😉 I’m going to cut it out for a bit and see what happens.

Right now, it doesn’t seem to be all dairy as my husband has been cooking vegetables with butter and there hasn’t been an issue with it. But I haven’t tried any other dairy products. I may attempt that this weekend – we’ll see!

I literally knock on wood every time before I say this, but I’ve been feeling good the past two days. I had some brain fog issues on Tuesday but I just tried not to focus on it too much and that night, I came home and was in bed by 8:00p and asleep shortly after. I slept until the alarm went off at 6:45a the next morning. It made such a difference in how I felt the next day, I’m going to continue trying to do that.

While my head was all foggy, I was looking up cures for brain fog – not really expecting to find anything but just to see what was being talked about in regards to it. It helped me to see that what I describe as brain fog is what others describe too – so I’m at least using the right term when I tell doctors that. The interesting part is that many articles also referenced different causes of brain fog including thyroid, adrenal fatigue and gluten intolerance. Um, check, check and check!

Many of my Lyme symptoms disappeared a long time ago. The symptoms I’ve not been able to kick have been the brain fog and the fatigue. With the fatigue, I think it will just take time because my body has been through so much. But what if the brain fog issue is really from my thyroid not being optimized or from the adrenal fatigue or from the gluten intolerance and cross reaction to other foods as well? What if it’s not from the Lyme at all and I’ve actually been done with all of the Lyme symptoms for a while? I still think about when my head was the clearest it has ever been since all this started and that was when I was in the hospital for my gallbladder and given stress doses of Cortisol for my adrenals. I think it’s too early for me to attempt to answer that one, and maybe I’ll never be able to but it’s interesting nonetheless. Yet another theory of mine – as if I need any more! haha

Also, my period started today. In the past, the few days leading up to my period and the actual week of my period have been pure hell. But other than the brain fog on Tuesday, I’ve been okay. It scares me to even admit it because I’m terrified it will be taken away from me again. But I have to remember to stay positive with this. I keep reminding myself that I didn’t herx at all with the Doxy or Rocephin this time and the herxes I thought I was having with the herbals were likely allergic reactions!

So far, so good. I hope this continues. I’ve been praying for a strong immune system and a healthy body. I hope my prayers will be answered!

Now off to bed to make sure I get plenty of rest again tonight!

Doubting My Diagnosis

I just finished up seven days of IV Rocephin and seven days of Doxycycline. She ran blood work again and my platelet count had rebounded to 274 so she deemed me finished. My rash had disappeared by Saturday and my fever finally broke on Saturday as well after hitting a high of 102.5 on Friday afternoon.

So why am I doubting my diagnosis?

1. Everything I’ve read says that the rash shows up 3-5 days AFTER the fever and other symptoms start. That’s one reason why it’s so difficult to diagnose because when you first present, you just seem like you have the flu. My rash started at least by the 8th of June and was there before then – I just don’t remember exactly when. But I know it was there on the 8th because I was a little worried when I went to get my massage and just told her to focus on my back and neck because of it.

2. Everything says that the rash starts as pink macules around the wrists and ankles and then spreads. Mine started on the inside of my thighs and spread from there. It did start spreading when the fever started but I never had the pink macule rash. And it was never even on my ankles or wrists.

3. The petechiae rash that I had (small little dots) is considered an indicator of late stage RMSF. Wouldn’t I have been hospitalized if that was the case? Especially since mine has always been that and it had been around for at least three weeks when the fever started? RMSF is suppose to be deadly if you don’t get treatment in eight days and you need treatment by day five to avoid complications.

4. The fever was really odd. I had a fever on Sunday, nothing Monday to Wednesday, and then a fever again beginning on Thursday that broke Saturday. The fever typically doesn’t come and go – or at least not that I’ve read.

Maybe I’m trying to justify it or just flat our deny the fact that I managed to get bitten by yet another tick that happened to have other tick diseases when I spend zero time outside? I don’t know.

All I know is I’m glad that I did get treatment. RMSF is certainly nothing to play around with so even if there was a thought it could be that, I did need treatment. The treatment she gave me also treats Lyme so that’s not a bad thing either.

I really think it was an allergic reaction to the herbal meds. I’ve read in the past few days that allergic reactions can cause fever as well. And when I looked up pictures of rashes from drug allergies, it looked just like mine. And it would make sense that it did spread as I kept increasing the dosage of the medication.

If that’s the case, maybe I wasn’t herxing at all. I was just having an allergic reaction to the medications. Because in seven days of Rocephin and Doxy together, I didn’t have a herx reaction (*knock on wood* – I haven’t said anything to anyone because I didn’t want to jinx myself). When I started on Doxy originally, I had a big herx on the 4th day and with Rocephin, it was the 2nd day. This time, other than a little nausea if I didn’t eat with the Doxy, I couldn’t even tell I was taking anything.

I guess the only way I would know for sure is to try the herbal meds again but I’m scared to do that now. Also the antibodies to RMSF and Ehrlichia should both show up on blood tests in a few weeks too.

For now, I’ll just be glad I had treatment and that maybe not having a herx means the Lyme is under control.

As always, time will tell….

Well That Didn’t Last Long….

I have been praying that I would be given some sort of sign about whether the allergic reaction was really the answer. When I woke up Thursday morning, I had a fever again. When I took a shower, I got so weak, I had to sit down in the shower. And when I did, I saw something crawling on my leg. I brought my leg towards me and said out loud “that looks like a tick” but as I did it, the water washed it away. So at this point I was really starting to freak and I decided to go back to my infectious disease doctor to see if she thought there was anything to the rash.

I was really nervous about going back after what happened last time but the more I thought about it, the more uneasy I was with just waiting to see what happened – especially with the fever coming back – and the Benadryl hadn’t accomplished anything but letting me sleep.

So she came in and asked me what was going on. I dropped my pants to show her the rash and as I was doing that, I told her about the fever, muscle aches and fatigue. I said I had already been to my other doctor who didn’t know what it was and she ran labs that were normal.

She took one look and said you have Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichia. Um, WHAT?! Then she looked at my labs and said while they were “normal”, there were a few key indicators like white blood cell count and platelets that were low – and that points to tick borne disease, particularly these two diseases.

I said ok, so do we do blood tests? And she said no, I had to start treatment immediately. I said well Rocky Mountain is dangerous isn’t it? She replied that it can be very serious and we have to avoid complications like meningitis. That’s why they don’t wait for a blood test to confirm the diagnosis.

So I got an IV of Rocephin before I left and she gave me a prescription for Doxycycline. I have to go back daily for IVs at least until Monday and possibly longer. I will take the Doxy for two weeks.

After I got back to work, I (of course) started looking these up. And it scared me…big time! Article after article said it has to be treated within five days of symptoms to have a chance of avoiding serious complications, including death. Thursday was the 5th day. What if I had continued to just operate under the assumption it was an allergic reaction? I don’t even want to think about what could have happened.

Even at work, people were telling me before I went back to the doctor again that was I was overreacting and I probably just had a normal virus. They told me to quit freaking out over everything just because I had Lyme. It’s bad enough to be dealing with everything but even worse when people make you feel like you’re crazy on top of everything else.

And had I listened to them instead of my gut, I could have died. Scary.

So now I’m battling this fever that barely goes away before it comes back again. I woke up this morning with a fever of 100.9 and took ibuprofen. This afternoon, it went back up to 101.1 so I took more. An hour later, it was 102.5. I had to take Tylenol as well before it came back down to normal. And I’m sure in a few hours, I’ll have to take something again.

So I’m thankful I’m getting more treatment and so incredibly thankful that this doctor recognized what it was. I did email back the other doctor’s office to let them know of the diagnosis.

At the same time, I can’t believe my luck. Not only did I get Lyme, eight months later I apparently get bitten AGAIN and get Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichia! And with the RMSF, it says there are only 250 to 1200 cases a year (depending on the year). I mean what are the freaking odds with all of this?!

Supposedly there’s a small percentage of ticks that carry disease and I just happen to be bit by two who carried three different ones?! Not to mention, that according to many sources, there is no Lyme in this state anyway! (what a joke!)

Hopefully I will recover from these quickly without lasting effects. At this point, I don’t know if all of this other stuff is just masking the Lyme symptoms or if I’ve had a break from them but I haven’t had any brain fog type symptoms since last Friday (so right at a week). I guess we’ll see once I’m over these!

I’m also curious to see if I’m going to have a herx with these medications since they’re the same ones that treat Lyme. It should be interesting!

Now I just hope my veins hold out for all of these IVs!

As for avoiding ticks, we went by the vet’s office to get yet another tick medication for our dog and we’re having our yard professionally sprayed for ticks on Monday. We’re also not allowing our dog to sleep in the bed with us any longer. Because my feet basically haven’t left the pavement since I was diagnosed with Lyme, it has to be from our dog bringing them in from outside.

Sigh.

One day, I’m going to be healthy again and dealing with all of these tick diseases will just be a memory. Right now, I’m ready to move!!

Calling It Quits

The NP called me this morning and said all of my blood work was normal except for my thyroid. She only measured TSH but my doctor who manages that will never adjust my medications just based on that number. She wants me to drop my dosage but I told her I would talk to him about it.

So normal labs – my WBC was even on the low end. The good news is liver and kidney enzymes still look good, although a little higher than last time they were checked. That’s one thing that’s been consistent – with the exception of TSH, my labs have always been perfectly in range.

So she said that only leaves one option for all of this – the herbal medications. Maybe the fever was some kind of viral thing since it was basically just a day long thing. But the rash is something different. Of course, it could be part of a herx and that’s the tricky part. What’s a herx and what’s an allergic reaction?

Last night, my head felt very strange. But not brain fog or even typical Lyme brain as I call it. It was more the feeling that I was about to pass out. My husband ran downstairs to get me a protein shake and protein bar so I ate that at 10:30 last night. Then I got in the tub. When I got in, I noticed the rash – it was spreading.

Yesterday morning, it had spread a little further on my upper legs, was on my butt! (sorry, TMI) and very faint and sparse on both arms. Well, now it’s going down my calf on my left leg and spreading upwards towards my stomach! So something has got to give because I don’t want this stuff on my FACE!

And then my tongue started feeling tingly. Now, full disclosure, I was beginning to freak out with the rash spreading so quickly. So that could have been all in my head. Just to be safe, I took Benadryl again before I went to bed. Otherwise, I don’t think I would have ever been able to fall asleep.

I told her when she called I would stop the herbal meds and see what happens. Truth be told, I’m terrified of what this is going to mean. Will I spiral backwards? Will all my symptoms come back full force? Time will tell.

IF this makes the rash go away, then I’ll reintroduce the herbal meds one at a time to see if I can determine which one was causing it. If it doesn’t go away, then I suppose I’ll start eliminating supplements. That will take forever though to figure out which one because I take so many! I just hope it’s something as simple as an allergy and not really something else. Something tells me that’s not the case but I don’t know.

As of now, I’m just really scared of what the future may hold with this. Fingers crossed that as my system gets rid of all of these medications and toxins, I will start to feel better. Maybe my treatment can really end.

We’ll see….

A Fever and a Rash

Yesterday was HORRIBLE. On Saturday, we went out and did a few things like driving 60 miles to get chocolate bars for me that are sweetened with stevia. One bright spot! I started feeling a little run down by the end of the day but nothing more than normal, or “Lyme normal” anyway.

But Sunday, I woke up feeling really bad. I was sweating (which is weird) so I took my temp and it was 99.7. Very strange for me. Ever since all of this started, I’ve struggled to get my temp to 98! I took some ibuprofen and then just laid around. By the afternoon, the temp was 101.9, my entire body was achy like I had the flu and I just plain felt bad. So I literally laid in bed all day long and just drank a ton of water. I took an epsom salt bath to see if it would help but no luck there.

Sunday morning, I dropped my dose back to 15 drops each. And Sunday night, I only did 10 drops. I figured I either had an infection (or something viral) or this was a major herx. It seemed odd to me that it could be a herx because I had no brain fog (which is generally an intense symptom). It was much more like having the flu – not like the herxes I’ve had in the past.

The other thing that is weird is a rash on my legs. This thing has been there for several weeks but it kind of comes and goes. One day it will be really dark, the next day, kind of light where I can’t really see it. It’s a flat rash that just looks like someone put little dots on my legs with a dark red marker. It doesn’t itch and outside of seeing it, I wouldn’t have any idea it was there. Until Sunday, it had been in a pretty small area – maybe 3 inches by 3 inches. When the fever hit, the rash expanded further on my legs. Weird. I’ve searched everywhere online for causes and can’t really find anything other than blood infections. I can’t find anything Lyme related that looks like this rash. So I’ve been wondering if it’s due to the herbal medications…

So Monday morning, I called my internal medicine doctor’s office and they got me in with the NP at 10:30. When they took my vitals, my blood pressure was high for me (not by normal BP measures) and my heart rate was in the 140s. But no temp – it was 98.5. Go figure, right?

She comes in and says it could be the new med she put me on (which I haven’t talked about) but I told her the rash was there prior to starting it and that wouldn’t explain a fever. Then she said maybe it was my thyroid levels being off which could explain the heart rate but not the fever or the rash. So then we thought maybe it was multiple issues that just SEEMED like it was one rolled together. My son had the same high temp on Saturday afternoon that disappeared by Sunday morning. The only difference was he acted totally normal with it (which is actually a big relief to me!).

I told her I had issues with tachycardia in the past but no one has figured out why. And I just had a full cardiac workup a few months ago and the cardiologist said everything was fine – and that was with a fast heart rate AND an abnormal rhythm.

She decided to run labs and while I was sitting there waiting for my labs to be drawn, she came back in and said she wanted to do an EKG before I left. Then she made sure to tell me how to call the on call doctor after hours. She was kind of freaking me out! So I went back to the room and they did the EKG. A few minutes later, she appeared and said it just showed a fast heart rate but no abnormal rhythms so she felt better about it.

So far, the fever hasn’t returned. I don’t feel great but I feel better than I did yesterday. She said we were going to rely heavily on the labs so now it’s just a waiting game for those to come back from the lab.

A Discovery…

I was cleaning stuff out today and I ran across a prescription I never filled from my dermatologist. The prescription says to apply to the RASH and it’s dated July 5, 2012. Coincidence?

I had completely forgotten about this rash. And in fact, that should tell you just how bad my memory was that when I was diagnosed, it never even entered my mind that I had a rash when my symptoms started! As soon as I saw the prescription, I did remember though. It was on my right side just under and around where my bra strap sits. I remember we kept changing detergents, soaps, etc thinking something we were using was irritating me but also thinking it was weird that the rash was only in that one spot if it was some sort of contact dermatitis.

A few weeks after I went to the dermatologist, the rash went away on its own. So could this have been the tick bite? It had been there a few weeks by the time I went to the dermatologist – and I wasn’t even going for the rash, it was for my annual check-up.

It would be wonderful if so because that means I couldn’t have passed it to my son. What a complete and total relief that would be!

I guess I will never know for sure but it seems a little too coincidental that I had a rash at the same time that my symptoms started. It’s too bad the dermatologist didn’t recognize it if that’s what it was. I probably could have been cured if I had been treated then. Oh well, no use getting upset about it now because that won’t change a thing. I think I’ll just be thrilled beyond belief that this could mean I didn’t have it when I was pregnant.

Maybe God was trying to give me a sign. Because I can’t for the life of me figure out why I would have kept a prescription for this long that I never filled. And it’s not like it was hidden away somewhere – it’s been sitting in the bill organizer on our kitchen counter since I got it. As I was cleaning up, I tore it in half preparing to throw it away when the word “rash” caught my eye. And then I saw the date.

I just think it’s too odd and too coincidental. Maybe, just maybe, I finally at least have that answer.

Frustrated, Mad and Defeated

Just two days ago, I wrote about how I had two days of no symptoms. Yesterday though, it was like “Hi, remember me? I’m here to kick your butt again!” I felt horrible all day. My head was completely messed up and I just felt like I wanted to curl up in bed and stay there. Today was my scheduled day to work at home. So it was good to be able to rest and just use my laptop to work from my bed.

But what I really want to talk about today is just the lack of understanding and compassion about this disease. First, Lyme disease is chronic unless you are treated within 3-4 weeks of the tick bite. There is no cure outside of that time frame. Did you read that? NO CURE. Because of the medical community’s blindness and ignorance towards Lyme disease, treatment within 3-4 weeks didn’t happen for me. So it’s highly probable that I will be dealing with this for the rest of my life.

This is the definition of “chronic”:

A chronic condition is a human health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects. The term chronic is usually applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three months.

I’m in month 7 of my treatment and I’m getting very close to the one year mark since my symptoms began. It’s chronic. Hopefully, I will have long periods of remission where I generally feel like my old self. But I’m not there yet.

Hopefully, many of the symptoms I’m still having will resolve and are not the result of permanent damage that has been done, but only time will tell.

Hopefully, the people around me will finally actually listen as I try to explain this and stop asking me why I’m not better yet (with an insinuation that it’s somehow my fault or they don’t believe I’m sick at all).

Hopefully, people will recognize that it’s not really possible for me to put into words how I feel on the inside and I have absolutely no explanation for why I look “normal” on the outside. I know I don’t look sick – but that doesn’t mean I’m not.

I struggle with keeping much of what this disease is doing to me out of the limelight (like that play on words?!). I do my best to hide it from coworkers, my boss and friends. For one, I don’t want others to know just how jacked up my head is on some days due to neurological symptoms (um, what did you say your name was again even though I’ve known you for years?). Two, I feel like people are so sick of hearing about me being sick. And maybe I don’t blame them. But I also hope they, especially some of my “friends”, never feel as alone and isolated as I’ve felt over the past year in my struggle to deal with this.

Hopefully, people will take the time to actually do a little research into what Lyme disease is and how it’s affected people’s lives before giving me asinine advice like “stop all these drugs and let your immune system handle it”. If my immune system was doing what it was suppose to, I would have never gotten sick! My immune system doesn’t work because of what Lyme does to it. Would you tell a cancer patient to just stop chemo and see what happens? Would you tell a dialysis patient to just give it up and go to the house? Of course you wouldn’t. And their doctors wouldn’t tell them that either.

But that’s where Lyme is different. Because people do tell me that. And the doctor told me that too. Just stop taking everything and let your body do its thing. My body doing “its thing” with this infection in it consists of mixing up words, not being able to speak in coherent sentences, not remembering from one word to the next what I was talking about, not remembering important events from my past (or conversations from 30 minutes ago), an unsettled, dizzy feeling in my head for hours on end, out of body type experiences, drenching night sweats, panic attacks, joint pain in my knees to the point of limping, heart palpitations, intolerance to cold one minute and heat the next, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, so many food sensitivities that it’s easier to tell you what I can have than what I can’t, Bell’s Palsy where half of your face droops, tingling and burning sensations in my arms, stiff neck, visual disturbances, feet that feel like I have been standing on rocks for hours on end, and a fatigue that can’t even be explained and is not relieved by any amount of sleep or rest.

But yes, let’s just stop all of my treatment and let all of these symptoms take over. After all, that sounds like a great life to be able to live. I mean who wouldn’t want to be like this day in and day out? The next time you feel inclined to tell me that, why don’t you trade places with me for one day? How about you take on just the neurological symptoms alone and tell me how you feel about just stopping my treatment then?

I want to be well again. I want to be able to do things with my husband and our son without worrying about whether I have the stamina to do them. I want to be able to take him to the zoo, not have guilt because I know there’s no possible way I can walk that much in one day without a rush of symptoms. I want to have interest in things again, to be able to feel emotion and to be able to express myself in written or verbal form. I don’t want to be intimidated in meetings because I never know when I open my mouth to speak if my brain is going to fail me.

I want to be able to eat normal foods like a normal person instead of asking for an allergen menu and begging them to avoid cross contamination of my food. I want to be able to have a single slice of cake on my birthday. I want to be able to go to the grocery store without spending all of my time reading labels looking for hidden gluten or sugar and over and over again, replacing the product back on the shelf and walking away. I want to have something to drink besides water.

I want to be able to do things with the money we work so hard for other than pay for doctors who don’t take insurance, more supplements than I can count and herbal medications that I have no idea if they actually work. I want to be able to go on vacation without calculating in the back of my head how many doctor’s appointments it would equate to if we didn’t go. I want to wake up in the morning without dread because I know I have to swallow more than 20 pills.

I want to come home in the afternoons and not have to fight the urge to go straight to bed. I want to be able to have the energy to play with my son. I want to be able to be excited when he’s standing beside my bed in the morning saying “Mommy, wake up, the sun is up!” I want to be happy the sun is up too.

And one day all of this will happen. One day I will be in remission. One day I will be me again. But until that day comes, I just ask for your support. Educate yourself about this disease and if you’re not willing to do that, then kindly keep your comments to yourself. I’m fighting every day to recapture the person I used to be before this bacteria took over and I don’t need to be fighting your ignorance and condescension as well.

Two Symptom Free Days

Yep, two whole days over the weekend without any symptoms other than being tired. But it wasn’t necessarily exhausted tired like I don’t want to move – just didn’t have a lot of energy.

But NO brain fog, no forgetfulness, no slurring, no mixing up words….WOOHOO!

Today has been a pretty good day as well. I’ve felt all day like my head was trying to start but it never really happened.

I’ll get my B12 shot tonight, so hopefully that will help as well.

I also had a massage on Saturday. I’m still a little sore from it but it was really nice. Well, it was nice right up until the end when she tried to sell me a bunch of herbal remedies. I hate those sales pitches. I told her I was already taking too much stuff and had no idea what would interfere and what wouldn’t. She said the ones she was recommending didn’t interfere with anything and I could take them as needed. So what are they – water?! Needless to say, I passed on all of that. I’m spending plenty on supplements recommended by a doctor – I don’t think I need any recommended by a masseuse!

My next massage is on the 17th. And then a few days after that it will be time for the monthly flare-up. I’m really curious to see how that is going to work out this month with switching to the herbal medications! Maybe it won’t be too bad.

All in all, it’s been a nice couple of days. We were even able to get out of the house to go to a museum and I was able to walk around for several hours and climb stairs without issue.

It’s progress and I’ll take it!

Dropping Some Supplements

At one point, I was up to taking 24 pills a day. And I hate swallowing pills….to the point it sometimes makes me gag. I spend a lot of time in the vitamin shop rattling bottles trying to determine how big the pills may be.

When I was putting all of my medications and supplements into my medicine dividers, I realized the 7-keto runs out tomorrow and the ALA runs out on Saturday. Normally I wouldn’t drop two things at once but I hate to buy another bottle just to avoid that. And I think the only thing the 7-keto has accomplished is making my skin break out and increasing my cup size (not a welcome change!).

And actually I’m possibly dropping three things. When I was taking the Doxy, I had to space it apart from calcium. Because of that I always took my multi at lunch. The Ginseng and my multi look practically identical and the only way I can tell them apart is when they’re in my mouth (the multi is a raw vitamin and tastes horrible!). So I also took it at lunch. Well, yesterday it dawned on me that my brain fog always settles in about an hour after lunch. It doesn’t happen all of the time so it may be completely unrelated to my supplements but you just never know.

So this morning, I decided to take everything with breakfast since I no longer take the Doxy. I take the herbals as soon as I get out of bed so it’s generally about two hours later by the time I eat so I don’t have to worry about interactions.

And what do you know? The brain fog started about 45 minutes after I took everything. I rarely have it start in the morning!

Tomorrow I’m going to skip the ginseng and see if it makes a difference. Maybe it won’t and it’s just a fluke but there’s only one way to find out.

6/6: Last dose of Ginseng (started 2nd week of April)

6/7: Last dose of 7-Keto (took it 60 days)

6/8: Last dose of ALA (have been on it since late 2012)

Tomorrow, I will also increase my dosage of the herbals to eight drops. The only exaggeration of symptoms I’ve had is the fatigue and brain fog. And to be fair, the fatigue started with my last flare up (around the 25th of May) and never went away again.

I also booked myself a massage on Saturday and will finally be using my gift certificate from Christmas. I hope it helps! And then starting on the 17th, I will go weekly for six weeks. I figure with each supplement I drop, I can add another massage for the same cost! haha

Will post back soon with the results of my little experiment!
